I can’t believe more than a year ago we lost our precious basset hound Bam Bam. You never know how attached you are to a pet until it is not there anymore waiting outside your shower door or licking off the crumbs off the floor while you’re cooking. Losing Bam Bam was horrible for me–the girl who hated dogs all her life and then it all changed when I fell in love with my husband Miguel; I fell in love with his dogs too. My husband had Bam Bam for 13 years, ever since he could fit him in the palm of his hand.
When the time came to put Bam Bam down, I bawled like I’d never bawled in my life. It was the first time I lost someone so close to me; that was my company every single day, that shared a routine with me and it crushed me. It took only two months before we looked for another dog and then one day, we found a cute 5 month basset hound puppy that we would later name Gala. Read more about our year with her below and check out my previous post with tips on how to handle a puppy if you’re thinking of adopting. Get to meet Bam Bam here.

The wind was crazy yesterday–let’s ignore my hair in this photo!
Our year with Gala has been so fun, challenging, eye-opening and it has made us realize not all basset hounds are created equal. Here are some fun tidbits from our first year with her:
- Why did we name her Gala? We named her Gala after surrealist painter’s Salvador Dali’s muse. We are a fan of his work and she has really grown into that name.
- But we nicknamed her: “Ninja Warrior” because she loves to make erratic jumps from the wall, to the floor, to the door and back to the couch just like on that Ninja Warrior show.
- She loves the camera and getting her picture taken. Even though she is on the hyper side, whenever she sees a camera she stays still and looks right at it. I’m a proud blogger fur mom indeed!
- She is a basset hound mix (unlike what we were told) so she is not as mellow as a basset hound. But I feel like we got the best of both worlds: she looks like a basset hound but she’s tinier and more energetic.
- She loves her bed Lately she’s been jumping into her bed likes she’s about to complete a home run and need to make it to home-base! LOL
- Her favorite thing are belly rubs. Just get close enough to her and she will show you her belly and you better rub it.
- She’s been called a handful at Petsmart Hotel but they still love her and call her by name because Gala is popular, cute and she gets away with stuff because of that!
- In moments of stress hugging Gala calms me down. Seriously, if I’ve ever feeling overwhelmed, my husband knows to bring her over so I can hug her.
A special thank you to FlyDoggy for Gala’s scarf and KisaKisa Fashion for my fab clutch! Both are creations by Houston designer Kisa Williams and would make an awesome Christmas gift for anyone who is as obsessed with their dog as I am!
