As a young girl in Honduras, Selena’s music was a trademark in my household. My parents had her CD and we used to listen to it all the time. It was like our background music of choice and what my dad would crank up in the car many times. When I heard of her death it was difficult for me to process what had happened until I saw her amazing life unfold in the Selena movie where Jennifer Lopez portrayed her beautifully. It was in that movie I also found out she didn’t speak Spanish but she was the epitome of a Latina I’ve always looked up to! The Tex-Mex Queen actually spoke English as her first language and sang her heart out in Spanish. She was a native of Corpus Christi, Texas and she stole everyone’s hearts with her charisma, smile and talent. It was such a loss in the music world when we lost her.
Last year, when I found out a petition had been going around for MAC to honor Selena with a make-up line inspired by her, I knew I’d be standing in line like I did today with my fellow Houston Latina Bloggers Wendy and Maddy so we could score some of the goodies. The store opened at 10am and we got there at 9:30 and there was a tame crowd though there were some people in line since 7am! We managed to make it to the chaos-free line at Saks Fifth Avenue at Galleria Mall (thank you to the sales associates at MAC at Saks-you guys were super nice!) and we were restricted to buying only 3 products from the entire line (after buying 3 you could get back in line to purchase more but I didn’t). In our first 40 minutes inside the store waiting in line, the mascara and powder brush had sold out! I was vying for the lipsticks and blush/bronzer combo so it was all good!
Oh God! We nearly cried when we heard they were playing her music inside the store! Too bad we couldn’t just hang out and hear her music while swatching all her products because I totally would have stayed there longer.
While in line, we filled out order forms so the sales associates would have our bags ready to go!

Can you tell what color was Selena’s favorite?
I managed to score the “Techno Cumbia” Blush and Bronzer, and two lipsticks: “Como La Flor” and “Dreaming of You.” All product names are names of some of her popular songs.
Here’s some detail shots of what I bought:
